Dear Mr Austin Clarke,
I found that I had at last enough poems to make this book and I hope you won’t mind my sending you a copy of it. I thoroughly like your poetry, and I shall be very pleased indeed if you like any of mine. I have great hopes that you will like it, for you were one of the few – the awfully few – people that I could agree with about poetry, and what was good and what was bad in poetry. I would be very interested to know what you think of these poems. The “Prometheus” is my favourite but I’m very much afraid it won’t appeal to many people. If ever you feel like writing me a line to say what you think I shall be delighted to get it. I’m sending this to your publishers as I have no idea where you live.
My husband joins me in sending you kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,
Mary Devenport O’Neill.
